A weekend of houses, horses, collector cars, shopping and country

Fitch's Corner Horse Trials Weekend was held on July 24th and 25th at the Millbrook horse farm of Fernanda Kellogg and her husband, Kirk Henckels.

The combo of horses, collector cars, shopping and country dance topped off with a stylish luncheon prepared by a celebrity chef is a recipe for a fun filled weekend with plenty to amuse all. Founded by Fernanda and Kirk and hosted at their classic horse farm the community makes this the summer weekend not to miss.

The core activity is the three phases of horse eventing. Starting with the refined discipline of dressage, there were six arenas running simultaneously. Riders then performed over the two mile long cross country course jumping ditches, banks, and in and out of the water complex at a full gallop. Stamina and precision are required when jumping the combinations against the clock in the third phase of show jumping.

250 horses entered at four levels filling the 150 acre farm with horses from one end to the other. Among the crowd pleasers were former USA Equestrian Team rider Bobby Costello from Southern Pines, North Carolina, Ferial Johnson from the Boston and local Millbrook champion Bonnie Stedt.

Sponsoring the weekend's activities were Houlihan Lawrence Real Estate, which features swell gentleman farms to fulfill a horse lover's dream. Also, Hunter Boot, known for the colorful and trendy wellies seen on Millbrook's Main Street and Madison Avenue as well as on neighbors and friends Barbara and Donald Tober.

The stadium arena formed the nexus for the show jumping, social events and Fitch's Market. 45 shops under the big marquee offered fashions, jewelry, antiques, home decor and gifts for horse and hound. Millbrook residents scooped up the Robert Redd polo shirts and Stubbs and Wooton shoes, and shoppers were introduced to the new collection of evening tunics from Bella Tu, and the debut of Tailgates the new source for the chic country picnic. In the equine village equestrians could select from fine Devoucoux saddles made in France to custom made jumps for your own private jumping course.

Saturday night the Blue Jean Ball themed "In the Spirit of the American West" attracted 550 for the concert and the ever popular DJ Joe Cool, Millbrook's favorite spinner of tunes. The Blue Jean Ball was sponsored by Morgan Stanley and Stribling.

On Sunday the Spectator Luncheon hosted 300 guests. Ladies and gentlemen wore hats if convenient - and it was convenient for most. Guests included social chairmen Jane and Bobby Hottensen, Deban and Tom Flexner, Warrie and Jim Price, Molly Schaefer, Bette Midler and her husband Martin von Hasselberg, Millbrook Hunt Masters Farnham Collins and Nancy Stahl, Daisy and Hugh Chisholm, recently returned from London, the host's daughter Fernanda Gilligan and her posse of pals including Georgina Schaefer, Ryan Jones and Jeff Caldwell. The country style buffet was prepared by local celebrity chef Job Yacoubian. To accompany the lunch was magnums of Charles Heidseick Champagne - the bubbly helps when celebrating the winners.

As part of the Awards Ceremonies, there was the Collector Car Parade with 15 classic cars led by Kirk Henckels in his Checker Marathon. The Fitch's Corner Award was presented to the Diana Pikulski of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation for rescue work with former thoroughbred race horses. All of these fun activities benefit Millbrook's Rescue Squad one of the communities most important services.
